Why does my Bedrock farm not work on a Java server?
Updated
Last checked 30 October 2026
A Java server runs Java rules for the whole world, and farms follow them too, even when you build from a phone. Bedrock farm designs, such as village iron farms with many beds, pistons that push chests, Bedrock duplicators and zero-tick farms, do not work there. Build the Java version of the same farm instead. The table below says which farms work and what to build.

Why does a phone player get Java farm rules?
Minecraft has two editions. Java is the PC version. Bedrock is the version on phones, tablets, Windows and consoles. The two editions follow different rules for redstone, pistons, mobs and villagers.
Phone players join a Java server through a bridge program called Geyser. Geyser changes what your phone sees, so you can play in the Java world. The world itself still runs on Java. So every farm in it works the Java way, whatever device you build it from. Geyser’s own list of limits names many places where the two editions still act differently.
That is why a farm from a Bedrock video can fail even when you copied every block. The blocks are the same, but the rules that move them are not. Look for a Java video of the same farm before you build.
Which farms work and which do not?
| Farm | On a Java server | Build this instead |
|---|---|---|
| Village iron farm with many beds and villagers | Does not work | A Java iron farm: 3 villagers, 3 beds and a zombie they can see |
| Pistons that push chests, hoppers or furnaces | Does not work: Java pistons cannot move them | Move items with hoppers and water streams |
| Bedrock item duplicators (hopper, dropper or portal) | Do not work | A Java TNT, carpet or rail duplicator, if the server allows it |
| Zero-tick crop farms | Do not work: Java removed them in 1.16 | An observer and piston farm for sugar cane, bamboo, melons or pumpkins |
| Crop farms (wheat, carrots, sugar cane, kelp, melons, pumpkins, cactus, bamboo) | Work | The same farm; collect the drops with hoppers |
| Mob towers | Work with a Java design | A Java tower, with your waiting spot close above it |
| Villager breeders and trading halls | Work | The same idea, near where you play |
| Slime farms | Only in Java slime chunks | Find slime chunks with a Java finder and your world seed |
| Redstone machines (doors, clocks, sorters) | Follow Java timing | Follow a Java tutorial for the same machine |
A switch or a plugin cannot turn a Bedrock farm into a Java farm. If a row says it does not work, rebuild that farm with a Java design.
How do I build a Java iron farm?
On Bedrock, iron golems come from big villages with many beds. On Java, a small group of villagers calls a golem when they are scared. You need much less to build one:
- Put 3 villagers in a small room they cannot walk out of.
- Give each villager a bed it can reach. They must sleep at night before the farm starts.
- Put a zombie behind glass where the villagers can see it. Keep it under a roof so the sun does not burn it, and give it a name tag so it stays.
- Leave open ground beside the room. Golems appear there. Follow a Java tutorial to collect their iron.
- Stay near the farm while it works.
If your villagers came from a world converted from Bedrock, they may have lost their beds and jobs. Let them sleep in a bed again. Place job blocks near them if you want them to trade.
Can I duplicate TNT or other items?
Bedrock duplicators do not work on Java. Java has its own TNT, carpet and rail duplicators, built with pistons and slime or honey blocks. The game treats them as a bug, so many Java servers turn them off. On a server that allows them, a design from a Java tutorial works. Ask the server owner first: the owner decides.
Pistons on Java cannot move chests, hoppers or furnaces. So a machine that pushes a full chest to copy it can never work on Java, with any setting.
Why did my levers and torches fall off?
Java does not let a lever, button or torch stay on the side of a piston arm that is pushed out. Bedrock does. When a Bedrock world becomes a Java world, those pieces can be copied over. They then drop as items the first time the redstone changes.
Pick them up and place them on a normal block next to the piston. If your machine still does not work, rebuild it with a Java design.
Why should I stay near my farm?
Minecraft only runs the part of the world near players. Crops grow, mobs spawn and villagers work only in that area. When everyone is far away or offline, the farm stops and waits.
Build farms close to your base, and wait near a farm while it works. Many servers also slow down mobs and villagers that are far from every player, so staying close matters even more there.
What is different on Shulkerboxes?
Shulkerboxes servers run Minecraft Java, so farms follow Java rules, even when you play on a phone. Bedrock farm designs do not work here: village iron farms with many beds, pistons that push chests or hoppers, Bedrock duplicators and zero-tick farms. Build the Java version of the farm instead, close to where you play. On Paper and Purpur servers on every plan, villagers keep working within 48 blocks of a player, and dropped sugar cane, kelp, melon slices, pumpkins, cactus and bamboo last five minutes. TNT, carpet and rail duplicators work only after the owner switches on Settings > Piston duplication, saves and restarts. In a world converted from Bedrock, levers and torches stuck to the side of a piston can drop at the first redstone change; place them again on a normal block. We are building a Bedrock-only server where Bedrock farms work as on your phone; it has no date yet.

FAQ
Is there a plugin that makes Bedrock farms work on Java?
We found none for current Java servers. Build the Java design of the farm instead.
Why does my iron farm make no golems?
A Bedrock iron farm needs a big village. On Java, golems come from 3 villagers who slept and then see a zombie. Rebuild it the Java way, near where you play.
Will a Bedrock farm work if I play on a PC instead?
No. The rules come from the server, not from your device. A Java server runs Java rules for every player.
Can I build a duplicator?
Only a Java TNT, carpet or rail duplicator, and only when the server owner allows it.
